Chestnut rice is a dish that feels like a warm embrace. It’s simple, sweet and super easy to put together. You don’t have to use fancy ingredients or spend hours in the kitchen. Just a few basics. One pot. Patience. For a rich and pleasant taste, you can also add a little margarine.
This recipe is perfect for a weeknight dinner. Or when you want to impress your friends with little effort. The texture of the rice absorbs the sweetness of the nuts. The result is a side dish that can stand on its own. Goes well with grilled meat. Or grilled vegetables. Or nothing. Sometimes I just want to eat a bowl of rice, so that’s it.
Ingredients
You don’t need a pantry full of exotic spices. The taste of the chestnut comes from the chestnut itself. Here’s what you need:
–2 cups of rice: Long grain rice is best. It remains independent.
– 250 g chestnuts: Fresh or frozen. Both are valid.
– 2 tablespoons of margarine: or butter. Butter adds depth to the nuts.
– 4 cups of water: Enough to cook the rice.
– 2 tsp salt: Adjust to your taste.
If you have trouble choosing delicious chestnuts, look for chestnuts that are heavy for their size. A shiny shell. There are no cracks. If it feels light, it may be dry inside.
Peeling and preparing chestnuts
Peeling chestnuts can be painful. Two layers. Rough shell. And a fuzzy inner skin. Do not skip this step. Or the dish will be gritty.
Boil it first. Put raw chestnuts in boiling water. Let stand for a few minutes. This loosens the shell. Drain off the water. Allow to cool slightly. Then peel it. Pull off the hard shell. Next, peel off the thin skin underneath. If you cook long enough, it should come off easily.
After peeling, cut into bite-sized pieces. small pieces. Not mush. We want you to feel the texture with every spoonful.
Cooking process
This is where the magic happens. It’s about adding layers of flavor.
Heat the margarine in a saucepan. Medium heat. Melt it. Add rice. Stir it around. You want to coat the grains with fat. This prevents them from sticking together later. Toast them for a minute or two. It should smell nutty.
Add salt. Stir. Next, add the chopped chestnuts. Mix them together. Pour water. Let it simmer. Then reduce the heat. Cover the pot. Let it simmer.
Do not lift the lid. Trust the process. The rice should absorb all the water. This will take about 15-20 minutes. When the water is gone, turn off the heat. Cover and let rest for another 5 minutes. This steams the rice. Make it fluffy.
