Cortisol has been through a public relations nightmare. For the last few years, the stress hormone has been framed as the villain in fitness. Poor recovery? It’s cortisol. Stalled progress? Cortisol. Lingering fatigue? You guessed it. Now, a brand is selling a new cortisol-reducing supplement promising to lower that stress, prevent burnout, and let you train harder.

But does it actually work? Do you need it?

The short answer is no, not unless you’ve already addressed the basics.

Here is the reality of high cortisol, why supplements might be a band-aid on a bullet wound, and what experts say about taking them.

Understanding the Cortisol Spike

First, let’s clear the air. Cortisol isn’t evil. Everyone needs it. It keeps blood pressure stable. It reduces inflammation. It makes you mentally alert. It even gives your body the energy to handle a challenge, says Tania Elliott, MD, an internist and immunologist at Mount Sinai.

But when does it become a problem?

When it stays high for too long. Chronic stress—from overtraining, life pressures, or illness—messes with your sleep. It hurts your mood. It tanks your immune function. Peter Ronai, an exercise physiologist at Sacred Heart University, warns that chronically elevated cortisol impairs muscle protein synthesis. This makes building or maintaining muscle mass nearly impossible. It also increases body fat, specifically visceral fat deep around the organs.

It happens temporarily. The spike helps break down stored carbs and fat to fuel the activity. The intensity dictates the spike. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) or heavy lifting causes dramatic spikes. Moderate jogging raises it modestly. Low-intensity yoga or walking? Barely any effect, according to Ronai.

The problems only arise when cortisol remains chronically elevate.

Usually, levels return to baseline within two-and-a-half hours post-workout, says Dr. Elliott. But duration matters. A short, punchy session spikes it sharp. A long endurance run keeps it elevated for hours.

Regular exercise actually builds resilience to these fluctuations. It’s the excessive volume without rest, or ongoing life stress, that causes the real issues.

How Do These Supplements Claim to Work?

The premise of a cortisol-reducing supplement is simple: help cortisol drop faster after intense training to support recovery. Theoretically, this improves performance by letting the body bounce back quicker, Ronai explains.

Common ingredients include:

  • Phosphatidylserine: Some evidence suggests it blunts the cortisol response to exercise.
  • Magnesium: Supports muscle relaxation and nervous system function.
  • L-Theanine: Promotes relaxation, though not a direct cortisol lowerer.
  • Tryptophan: A precursor to serotonin and melatonin; helps sleep regulation.
  • Amino Acids: Various roles in stress response.

Kovacs notes these may help regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis. But the research is mixed. It depends heavily on dosage and the specific ingredient.

The Transparency Problem

Here is where things get shaky.

Ronai points out a lack of transparency behind KA-EX’s new product. The brand claims it helps cortisol return to baseline, improves REM sleep, and supports heart rate variability (HRV).

But they don’t publish the study links.

We don’t know who was tested. We don’t know the sample size. We don’t know the study design or funding sources. Potential bias? Unknown. Does it actually prevent injury? No data.

A supplement will not fix the root problem if you are under-sleeping.

Even if the pill works, it doesn’t automatically make you faster. You might sleep better. Your autonomic nervous system might balance out. You might feel less tired. That’s not the same as getting stronger. Kovacs emphasizes that performance depends far more on lifestyle habits.

Should You Buy a Cortisol-Reducing Supplement?

Experts don’t recommend supplements as a first line of defense.

Kovacs is blunt about it: If you’re under-sleeping, not eating enough, or overtraining, a pill won’t fix the root issue. You have to fix the foundation first.

Focus on these non-negotiables:

  1. Sleep: Get seven to nine hours.
  2. Nutrition: Balanced intake.
  3. Hydration: Drink water.
  4. Stress Management: Actual techniques, not just hope.

Training habits matter too. The body adapts to hard exercise if supported by recovery. But continuing high-volume training without rest? That’s how you break down. If your performance is declining despite working harder, you need smarter workload management. Alternate hard and easy days. Schedule recovery weeks. Avoid consecutive high-intensity sessions.
